Rest In Peace

 Project Narrative

This project is based on a American Civil War Veteran who was buried by the State of Rhode Island in 1888, little did this man know he would be unearthed in the future. During the War of the Rebellion AKA the American Civil War this man served in the 2nd Regiment Rhode Island Infantry Volunteers(see veterans' history pages for more).

After serving his State and Country this man was tossed aside at the time of his death to be buried in a pauper grave at the Almshouse never to be given the military honors he deserved, but that is not the end of this story. In the 1970s the State of Rhode Island paved over the graves of several hundred men, women and children all buried in the Old State Farm Cemetery to create Rte.37. In 2006, 68 graves were either washed out by rains or unearthed afterwards due to the weather, run-off, and construction.

This is where the SUVCW (Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War) comes in, the State through Michael Hebert contacted us at a RI Advisory Commission for Historic Cemeteries Meeting in November of 2006. He sent us a copy of the names and data that PAL Inc. had compiled, with help from the National Archives Records Administration in Washington D.C. our reaserch team was able to identify one of these people as veteran. As you travel through these pages you will travel into the past and than back into the future. Come travel with us and learn what this man did for our country.
